A Message with A Mission: Dr. Paul Farmer Opens Calendar for Fall 2010
September 3, 2010
By focusing on the world’s poorest and sickest communities, Paul Farmer is transforming healthcare on a global scale. The world-renowned physician, anthropologist, and humanitarian is now available for a limited number of speaking engagements this November and December.
The subject of Tracy Kidder’s 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning Mountains Beyond Mountains The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World, Farmer has been an instrumental force in working to remedy global healthcare problems and social inequalities. One of the founders of Partners in Health (PIH), a non-profit health organization committed to bringing much-needed medical and preventative care to some of the most underdeveloped areas of the world, he delivers a message with a mission.
Serving as Chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and Chairman of Harvard Medical School’s Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, Farmer also launched a charity hospital in rural Haiti with Partners in Health, a facility that now provides free treatment to 1,000 patients daily. The recent earthquake there has put a spotlight on the critical situation of the Haitian people, and Farmer sees this as an opportunity to help address damage caused by the quake, as well as pre-existing issues facing the nation.
Farmer reminds us all that “as members of the world community, we must recognize that we can and should summon our collective resources to save the countless lives that were previously alleged to be beyond our help.” He believes we can do no less than this.
Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to hear dynamic healthcare and human rights speaker Paul Farmer discuss the on-going efforts of PIH, the current situation in Haiti, and the significance of working for social justice in today’s world.
