Speaker Judy Shepard Honored by GLAAD

March 12, 2008

In the ten years since the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, his mother, Judy Shepard, has become one of the world’s most visible advocates for hate crime legislation. With the Matthew Shepard Foundation, she has become a powerful voice for the LGBT community, helping the Senate pass the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and urging the House of Representatives to inact it into law.

For her dedication to her cause, the gay anti-defamation group GLAAD has honored Shepard with its Excellence in Media Award. Her public life stems from personal tragedy, but through her perseverance and dedication, she has changed the lives of many men and women, and continues to work to make the world a safer, more tolerant place.
