Chris Gardner and Jeannette Walls Celebrate Reading with Barbara Bush
A little extra star power will be added to the annual Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy Celebration of Reading fundraiser in Dallas on November 12. Chris Gardner, author of The Pursuit of Happyness and the inspiration behind the Academy Award-nominated movie, and Jeannette Walls, author of The Glass Castle, will be reading excerpts from their number one New York Times best-selling memoirs.
Gardner, one of the world’s most sought-after speakers, shares his story from homelessness to Wall Street. A homeless single parent, Gardner worked long hours to fulfill his dream of becoming a stockbroker and millionaire. He is a living testament to his message of breaking the cycle of fathers abandoning their children. With an inspirational, stirring, and emotional life story, he shows audiences that anything is possible.
On the New York Times best-seller list for over 93 weeks, Walls tells her story of growing up in incredible poverty, with parents who were neglectful and erratic. She overcame her circumstances and became a successful journalist. In spite of this, she kept her past a secret, until convinced to tell the truth. The result is The Glass Castle, one of the most popular memoirs of the decade. Her speeches inspire audiences to tap into their own personal resourcefulness.
The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy is one of the most successful literacy foundations in the world. Founded in 1989 by First Lady Barbara Bush, it has awarded over $30 million to nearly 650 family literacy programs in the United States.
