John Dau Nominated for Volvo for Life Award
November 02, 2007
John Dau, a former Lost Boy of Sudan, has been nominated for the Quality of Life award in the 6th Annual Volvo for Life Awards.
Dau, one of 27,000 Lost Boys forced to flee their homes in Sudan when the northern government began attacking the south, arrived in the United States in 2001 after walking from Sudan to Ethiopia and Kenya. Now a respected activist working to help Sudan recover from the violence that plagues the country, Volvo for Life has nominated him for the Quality of Life Award for improving the lives of children 16-and-under.
His nonprofit organization, the John Dau Foundation, is working to develop and sustain six shared medical and education centers in Sudan. The first medical clinic was opened in May 2007, and was supported by many luminaries, including Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
As a winner of the Volvo for Life Award, Volvo will donate $25,000 to the John Dau Foundation. It will also be eligible for up to $100,000 in aid. Dau can also receive a trip to the 6th Annual Gala in New York City, and receive a Volvo for Life.

Betty Nguyen Helps the Hungry in Vietnam
November 01, 2007
CNN anchor Betty Nguyen returns to Vietnam every year to give back to her homeland.
A recent Atlanta Journal-Constitution article highlighted the charitable work of Betty Nguyen. As a baby in 1975, she and her parents fled Vietnam after the Communist takeover, and Nguyen did not return until many years later.
Stunned by the hunger, disease, and poverty she found upon her first visit, she and her mother returned to the United States and founded the nonprofit foundation, Help the Hungry. Each year, Nguyen takes the donations the foundation receives - everything from toothbrushes and toothpaste to peroxide to prevent wounds from turning septic - and returns to Vietnam to hand out supplies. Traveling with the Red Cross, she distributes the generous donations and helps to change lives. She has said, “I got a good look at how poor and destitute [many Vietnamese are], and how truly blessed I am. And because I am blessed, I have to take responsibility for that.”
Nguyen is one of CNN’s most popular journalists, anchor the weekend editions of CNN Newsroom. Her powerful speeches chart her rise to the top in journalism and celebrate the importance of diversity and humanitarian work. She speaks from the heart, and her presentations encourage audiences to give back to commmunities in need.
