Jean-Michel Cousteau and Dr. Sylvia Earle Honored by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation
Famed ocean explorer and filmmaker Jean-Michel Cousteau and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Sylvia Earle, were recently honored with the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s 2008 Lifetime Achievement Awards. The Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting the federal National Marine Sanctuary Program through education and outreach, and protects and promotes public interaction with marine life.
Cousteau and Earle, two powerful voices for ocean and marine life preservation and protection, have devoted their lives to educating individuals on the beauty, power, and necessity of marine sanctuaries and life. Cousteau, the founder of the Ocean Futures Society, has produced and directed more than 75 films documenting the ocean and its life. Dedicated to continuing the legacy of his father, Jacques Cousteau, this “Voice for the Ocean” has made a valuable impact in our knowledge of the environment and world around us.
Earle, known as “Her Deepness,” is a Library of Congress Living Legend and a TIME “Hero for the Planet.” A pioneering researcher on marine ecosystems who has spent more than 7,000 hours underwater, she has profoundly impacted the course of marine conservation. Her passionate love of the oceans, combined with her research and intellect, have compelled her to become the conscious of global business, arguing that the seas must be nurtured if we are to sustain life on the planet for many years to come.
