About Eric Shanteau

By the age of 10 Eric Shanteau was already dreaming about swimming for Team USA on the world's biggest stage. After narrowly missing the 2004 Olympic Team, Shanteau's dream was realized when he qualified to swim the 200 meter breaststroke at the 2008 Beijing Games. However, unbeknownst to his teammates and coaches, Shanteau had been diagnosed with testicular cancer just 10 days before qualifying for the Olympic Team.

Shanteau became one of the most popular stories of the 2008 Olympics as he swam his way to a personal best time while his body battled cancer. Six days after returning from Beijing Shanteau began his treatment for cancer, and that is when he did the impossible.

Shanteau not only beat cancer, but returned to the water faster than ever. Less than a year after battling the disease he shattered records and became a World Champion. With a new perspective on life and the sport of swimming, Shanteau would spend the next three years at the top of the world ranks. Then, after qualifying for his second Olympic team, all of Shanteau's dreams came true when he won a gold medal at the 2012 London Games as a member of the 4x100 medley relay.

Shanteau is the true embodiment of resilience and perseverance. After his diagnosis he joined the fight against cancer by becoming a LIVESTRONG global envoy. He travels the country promoting awareness and straight, open talk about cancer. Shanteau combined his passion for the water with his humanitarian work when he started an open water swimming event benefiting LIVESTRONG. Since 2010 thousands of participants have joined dozens of Olympic swimmers to raise money for those currently battling cancer.
