The Race Card Project - Eavesdropping on America's Conversation on Race
Join us for a discussion on race and identity in America, with Peabody Award-winning journalist Michele Norris, founder of The Race Card Project™. The Race Card Project creates sturdy cultural bridges through candid conversation using real stories on race, culture and identity. In 2010, former NPR journalist Michele Norris began inviting people to distill their thoughts on the word race to only six words. Since then, The Race Card Project™ has collected more than 500,000 “postcards” from all 50 states and 96 countries. People often send backstories and photos to share more about what is behind their six-word statements. Many of these essays contain sentiments and hard truths rarely expressed out loud. Today, these powerful six-word memoirs kickstart honest conversations that leave people with a better sense of each other, and themselves, through a variety of tools and resources. The Grace of Silence and the Power of Words
Award-winning journalist Michele Norris's 2010 book The Grace of Silence started out as a quest to uncover how America talked about race in the wake of the Obama presidential election. What resulted was what Norris calls an \"accidental memoir.\" Named one of the year's best books by The Christian Science Monitor, the book became an eye-opening family history lesson revealing her own family's racial legacy and the larger conversation surrounding race in America. The book has also led to the spinoff blog \"The Race Card Project\" and a deeper look at our attitudes and beliefs about race.

Shaquem Griffin made history as the NFL’s first-ever one-handed player. Now he inspires others to overcome adversity and persevere.

Shaquem Griffin was born just minutes after his twin, Shaquill. Both boys went on to become remarkable athletes in high school and college at the University of Central Florida (UCF), and both play in the NFL after being drafted by the same team—but Shaquem did it all with just one hand.

At birth, Shaquem experienced a rare condition called amniotic band syndrome and his hand ultimately had to be amputated when he was four years old. His family refused to treat him any differently than his brother, and from the time he could say the words, his motto has been, “please don’t tell me what I can’t do.”

Shaquem’s collegiate accomplishments include first-team All-American Athletic Conference linebacker, AAC Defensive Player of the Year, National Champion and Peach Bowl MVP. After a historic performance at the NFL Combine, he was selected as a linebacker by Seattle, playing for the Seahawks from 2018 – 2020. His most memorable on-the-field highlight was sacking current NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers during the playoffs in 2020. He signed with the Miami Dolphins for the 2021 season and retired from the NFL in 2022.

After bringing home the gold and silver medals at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Laurie Hernandez went on to win the coveted mirror ball trophy on Dancing with the Stars, and to publish two books: I Got This: To Gold and Beyond, in 2017, and a picture book for children, She’s Got This, in 2018. Both were New York Times bestsellers. In recognition of Hernandez’s work as a Literacy Champion promoting readership as a path to leadership, Mattel created a Laurie Hernandez “Shero” Barbie to honor her.

A second-generation American whose grandparents are from Puerto Rico, Hernandez is the first U.S.-born Latina to make the U.S. Olympic team since 1984.

When not in the gym, Laurie enjoys spending time with her family. Acting is one of her biggest passions: she has done cameos, voiceovers, co-hosted American Ninja Warrior Junior, and plans to pursue an acting/screenwriting degree. She travels the country speaking to the next generation about following their dreams. She is also a fierce advocate for the importance of mental health and has partnered with multiple campaigns and initiatives to encourage awareness.

2016 gold medal–winning Olympic gymnast and Dancing with the Stars champion Laurie Hernandez shares her story in her own words.

At sixteen years old, Laurie Hernandez made many of her dreams come true—and yet was only the beginning for this accomplished athlete. A Latina Jersey girl, Laurie saw her life take a dramatic turn when she qualified and was chosen to be a part of the US Olympic gymnastics team. After winning gold in Rio as part of the Final Five, Laurie also earned an individual silver medal for her performance on the balance beam. Nicknamed “the Human Emoji” for her wide-eyed and animated expressions, Laurie continued entertaining while competing and winning on the hit reality TV show Dancing with the Stars.

By turns poignant and funny, Laurie’s story is about growing up with the dream of becoming an Olympian and what it took to win gold. Tyler James Williams is the 2023 Golden Globe Winner for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, Comedy or Drama for his role of ‘Gregory Eddie’ in the hit award-winning series Abbott Elementary.

After hitting it off with Quinta Brunson on A Black Lady Sketch Show, she specifically wrote the Abbott Elementary substitute teacher character with Williams in mind. He can also be seen recurring in Hulu’s sketch comedy History of the World: Part II.

On the feature film side, Tyler can be seen in the critically acclaimed film The United States Vs. Billie Holiday (2021), playing Lester ‘The Prez’ Young, alongside Andra Day, who received an Oscar nomination for her turn as Billie Holiday. Previously, Williams co-starred in the indie comedy The Argument directed by Robert Schwartzman, and starred in The Wedding Year (2019) opposite Sarah Hyland. He played a pivotal part in Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit (2017) alongside Will Poulter. Williams also had a starring role in the Sundance winning feature Dear White People (2014). In addition, he appeared opposite Craig Robinson and Kerry Washington in Peepeles (2013) for Lionsgate and in Paul Feig’s Unaccompanied Minors (2006) for Warner Bros.

On the television side, Tyler starred in ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier opposite Scott Foley and Lauren Cohan. He also starred in CBS’ Criminal Minds. He had a recurring role on HBO and Peter Berg’s Ballers, and before that in season 5 of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Perhaps most notably, Williams was discovered at the age of five for Chris Rock’s Everyone Hates Chris, which he starred in for four seasons.

Outside of acting, Williams is a talented musician, songwriter, and producer with songs available on iTunes. Born in Harlem, N.Y.C. and raised in Yonkers, Williams lives between New York and Los Angeles.

As “Crazy Jane,” the most powerful member of the show’s titular band of outcast superheroes, she is an unlikely and unstable hero who suffers from the world’s most severe case of multiple personality disorder—each of her 64 distinct personas comes with a different superpower.

She is also known for her role as “Sofia” on the CBS comedy Superior Donuts, and for portraying “Maritza Ramos” on the award-winning, Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated Netflix series Orange is the New Black (for which she received three Screen Actors Guild awards), and she plays \"Lina\" in CW's break-out hit Jane the Virgin. Guerrero’s advocacy work on behalf of Latino voter turnout, immigrants’ rights and for Black Lives Matter stems from her personal story as the U.S.-born daughter of undocumented immigrants who were deported to Colombia when Diane was just 14 years old. Model, Actress, Author, Advocate and Activist Dominique Jackson is best known for her leading role of Elektra Abundance on the FX television series Pose.

From fleeing persecution as a transgender woman in her home country of Trinidad and Tobago to starring in television hits, Dominique Jackson has seen it all. After experiencing homelessness and rejection from her own family, Jackson has used her success to shed light on the challenges transgender women like herself too often face.

Jackson stars in Pose, an FX television series about the African American and Latinx LGBTQ+ gender-nonconforming ballroom culture scene in the 1980s and 1990s. For Jackson, her character is more than just someone she plays in front of the cameras. She is a representation of what Jackson and many transgender women go through when they lose their families after coming out.

A leader in her community, Jackson has been awarded several accolades and was also inducted into the House and Ballroom Hall of Fame and deemed Iconic on February 27, 2016 at the NYC Ball Awards. In 2017, Jackson received the Legacy of Pride Award presented by Harlem Pride and received the first Bronx LGBT Leadership Award presented by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz JR and Allies LGBT Pride Celebration. That same year, she was honored with the New York State Assembly Citation issued by Mark Gjonaj.

A fashion model since 2000, Jackson began her career at Brooklyn Fashion Week before moving onto Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. In 2011, she served as Mistress of Ceremonies in Solomon Harris’ take on the ballroom scene Newark Is Burning at NJPAC (Newark, NJ). Jackson is one of the resident models to Adrian Alicea Couture, Manuel Pelferes Couture and Angel Ayala Couture. She added Gypsy Sport by Rio Uribe and Stevie Boi to her runway accomplishments during 2016 Fall/Winter Fashion Week.

In 2014, Jackson released her autobiographical memoir The Transsexual from Tobago (Revised). Later that year, she starred in Carla Pridgen’s Incongruence produced by Ivy Theatre. In 2016, she starred in Oxygen Network’s GLAAD Award winning reality docu-series Strut, executive produced by Whoopi Goldberg and Tom Leonardis, and the short film T Times by Gabriel Torres.

Jackson has served on the Community Health Program Board at the Montefiore South Bronx Healthcare Clinic for the last two years.

An Evening with Dominique Jackson
We know Dominique as the star of Pose, but for Jackson, her character is more than just someone she plays in front of the cameras. She is a representation of what Jackson and many transgender women go through when they lose their families after coming out. Through her interactive conversation, she hopes to inform audiences and to bring awareness to the injustices within the transgender community, while inspiring all of us to become stronger activists and allies.
Turning Trauma into Triumph
By the time she was 15, actress and model Dominique Jackson had experienced more trauma than most experience in a lifetime. As Elektra on the hit series Pose, Dominique’s role echoed some of her own struggles as a trans-gender woman rejected by her family, homeless and struggling to find acceptance in a world that seemed to believe she had no right even to exist. While everyone’s journey through trauma is unique, beginning is often the hardest part. Dominique came to realize that there are specific steps that can help anyone start the process of healing. As she shows audiences, to become the ‘you’ that you desire, you must teach the ‘you’ of today how to get there. Dominique shares the steps and habits of thinking that helped her turn trauma into triumph, and in this presentation her goal is to help you take your next step—whether that’s just knowing what to do to get started or facing the next hurdle.
Dominique’s keynote focuses on the specific skills that will help anyone struggling to process trauma and adversity and come out on the other side, including:
- How to find the courage to start when you know that the journey means having to re-live the trauma
- How to maintain the momentum once you’ve begun
- Why discipline and hard work are the qualities you must cultivate to succeed and how to jump-start your willingness to embrace them
- How to cultivate patience on your journey through trauma to triumph (which looks different for everyone)

Clark is a songwriter and producer. He has performed with many artists, including Maxwell, Brandy, Ne-Yo, Anita Baker and Michael Bublé. He was a co-writer on Mary J. Blidge's \"Irreversible\" on the album \"My Life II.\"

In addition to performing, Clark co-founded inDEFINED, an initiative that inspires and teaches young people to use their voices to erase constrictive labels in our society. He created his production company Artists Park Productions in 2018. Bryan is also highly in demand for his national speaking engagements with colleges and corporations throughout the United States.

Bryan is the recipient of the Icon Talks 2021 Visionary Award, Family Houston 2021 Pillar of Strength Award, Temple University’s 2019 Gallery of Success Award and the Rutgers University 2018 Voice for Social Justice Award.

Bryan Terrell Clark is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama and Temple University.

Angela has been deeply involved in some of the major social movements over the last 50 years. She was born and raised in Birmingham, Ala., by parents who were active community organizers. As a teenager, she marched and picketed against racial segregation. Angela went on earn a doctorate in philosophy. She became known as a radical feminist and activist, a member of the Communist Party USA, and an associate of the Black Panther Party.

Angela’s outspoken ways made her a focal point of criticism. Her Communist ties led then-California Governor Ronald Reagan in 1969 to try to bar her from teaching at any California university. The attempt failed; she is now professor emerita at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in its History of Consciousness Department.

Angela became the center of a firestorm in the 70s, when she was prosecuted for three capital felonies, including conspiracy to murder, but was acquitted. The charges stemmed from Angela’s purchase of weapons for her personal bodyguards; these guards in turn used the guns for a hostage takeover of a California courtroom. Four people were killed in the ensuing gunfight. Angela became a fugitive and was listed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitive List.

During the 1980s, she was twice a candidate for Vice President with the Communist Party. She left the party in 1991.

Angela has campaigned for social justice – particularly with what she calls the “prison industrial complex” that has grown since the 80s with the emergence of the private-prison industry. She is one of the founders of Critical Resistance, a national grassroots organization fighting for changes in the prison system. Her books include Are Prisons Obsolete, Abolition Democracy: Beyond Prison, Torture, Empire, Abolition. Feminism. Now. (2022) and Angela Davis: An Autobiography (2022).

Angela writes and frequently speaks as part of her mission to build engaged communities that seek to reform the U.S. prison system. She urges her audience to “hone their critical skills, develop them and implement them\" while fighting for racial, economic and gender justice.

Sherrilyn Ifill is a civil rights lawyer and scholar. From 2013-2022, she served as the President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF), the nation’s premier civil rights law organization fighting for racial justice and equality. She recently served as a Ford Foundation Fellow and as the Klinsky Visiting Professor for Leadership & Progress at Howard Law School. Ifill is currently the Vernon Jordan Distinguished Professor in Civil Rights at Howard Law School, where later this year she will launch the 14th Amendment Center for Law & Democracy. Ifill holds a fellowship at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Ifill’s tenure at the helm of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund was widely praised for elevating the profile, voice and influence of the organization, and for expanding and deepening its work across multiple areas of civil rights law. Ifill’s voice and analysis played a prominent role in shaping our national conversation about race and civil rights during a tumultuous period of racial reckoning in our country. Her strategic vision and counsel remains highly sought after by leaders in government, business, law, grassroots organizations, and academia.

Ifill began her legal career as a Fellow at the American Civil Liberties Union, before joining the staff of the LDF as an Assistant Counsel, where she litigated voting rights cases in the South. In 1993 Ifill left LDF to join the faculty at University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore where she taught for twenty years before rejoining LDF in 2013 as its President & Director-Counsel.

Ifill is a scholar whose work has appeared in leading law journals, periodicals, and the nation’s leading newspapers. Her book On the Courthouse Lawn: Confronting the Legacy of Lynching in the 21st Century, was highly acclaimed, and is credited with laying the foundation for contemporary conversations about lynching and reconciliation. She is currently completing a new book about race and the current crisis in American democracy entitled, Is This America? which will be published by Penguin Press.

Ifill is a graduate of Vassar College and earned her J.D. from New York University School of Law. She is the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates and many of the most prestigious medals in the legal profession including the Radcliffe Medal, the Brandeis Medal, the Thurgood Marshall Award from the American Bar Association, and The Gold Medal from the New York State Bar Association. Ifill was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019 and was named by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2021. She serves on the boards of the Mellon Foundation, New York University School of Law and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
