Captain Tammie Jo Shults is the widely acclaimed pilot who brought Southwest Flight 1380 in for a successful, heroic emergency landing in Philadelphia in 2018. Captain Shults shares how her entire life of preparation, steady leadership, and faith led her to that crucial moment in the cockpit.

If it’s a habit for you to do in your everyday management, then it will be a practice in crisis. Tammie Jo Shults

She captures her extraordinary story in the book, Nerves of Steel: How I Followed My Dreams, Earned My Wings, and Faced My Greatest Challenge (October 2019). In her inspiring keynote speeches, Captain Shults offers lessons in leadership, service through sacrifice, and the value of human life.

As a young girl, Shults was intent on becoming a pilot and she talks openly about the obstacles she had to overcome being a woman in the male-dominated field of naval aviation. She went on to become one of the Navy's first female F-18 fighter pilots and enjoy a long successful career as a commercial pilot with Southwest Airlines.

During her speech, audiences hear powerful flight-deck recordings between Shults and air-traffic control chronicling the chilling moments when, a short time after takeoff, at just over 30,000 feet, the plane’s left engine exploded, instantly causing multiple system failures and plunging the airliner more than 18,000 feet in the first five minutes alone. Years of extensive training as a United States Navy aviator kicked in; with nerves of steel, Shults and her co-pilot safely rerouted the crippled Boeing 737 to Philadelphia, saving 148 lives including passengers and crew. Tammie will be serving on the Women in Aviation Advisory Board to the FAA.
